Technology and Science with Ms. McGinty

Dear Students and Parents,

As the Technology/Science Cluster teacher at P.S. 193, I welcome all of our learners to an exciting year.  I have posted a copy of the information that was sent home with each student, including the DOE Acceptable Use Policy, Rules for the lab, and technology standards.  Please check your child's homework folder, read and discuss the the information with your child and return the tearoff to me. There is also a permission to photograph form that needs your signature if you grant permission.

In the Technology/science lab, each student will be responsible for doing his or her best in classwork and homework.  Cooperation and following directions are expected.  When your child enters the classroom, he or she must be prepared to work.  This involves using excellent listening skills, using "accountable talk" to discuss topics in class, completing assigned tasks and classwork on time, and following all safety/equipment rules in the lab.  Excellent behavior is also a “must.”

All of our classrooms are made up of unique individuals with different learning styles, interests, hopes and dreams and I ask that each parent and each student become an active partner in this learning community.  Students will be assessed through, classroom task performance, following directions, handling equipment appropriately, being prepared for class, quizzes, tests, individual folders and how well he/she works together with others.

As part of my goals for incorporating technology into our school instruction and providing access to the Internet, students must also be protected.  The Department of Education monitors and filters all web content and all web activity in accordance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). On occasion, however this is not 100% secure and therefore students must acquire skills in selecting appropriate web material and avoiding unacceptable online behavior (for example, plagiarism, pirating, visiting non-school related sites, etc.)  Students may also not post or transmit information via social media websites.

Students will need a pair of headphones (clearly labeled with name and class in a Ziplock bag).  Please avoid purchasing inexpensive headphones (the prong may break off and damage the devices).  Generally children also find the ear buds uncomfortable so you may wish to avoid them.
